Indonesian Buzz

Wow! Students have been participating in a wide range of activities including Indonesian dance, Batik art and Wayang puppet making, along with practicing speaking and writing stories using the Indonesian language!

Keluarga

Keluarga means ‘family’ in Indonesian. Year 5 students made booklets and wrote about their family members – who they were, their names and ages, and adjectives to describe their personalities.

Year 3 students created their own monsters and wrote about their appearance – number of body parts and colour.

Wayang

Wayang is an Indonesian heritage art form that is performed with intricate puppets made of wood or cow hide. Year 5 students made their own Wayang, then used them as props in their Indonesian conversations roleplay.

Indonesian Dance

During lunchtimes, a group of students learned and practised the Indonesian Kupu-Kupu (Butterfly) dance. The practice has really paid off, with their outstanding performance at the recent assembly where our school community was treated to their vibrant costumes, beautiful music and traditional dance moves – fantastic job everyone!

Batik Art

Students from Years 4-6 who chose Indonesian as their club in Weeks 6-10 during Term 2, explored the traditional Indonesian art of Batik and followed these steps:

Step 1: Trace a design onto a blank calico bag using lead pencil.

Step 2. Traditionally hot wax is used to fill the design. As an alternative, for safety reasons, we used a flour-based batter mix instead. This mix was then squeezed from a plastic bottle to trace over the designs on the calico material.

Step 3: Once the batter mix dried, students then used fabric paint to decorate their work in a fantastic kaleidoscope of colour!

Step 4: After the paint dried, students peeled off the hardened batter mix to reveal their beautiful Batik pattern underneath. The bags were steam ironed to set the brilliant colours.
