As part of our school’s focus on improving Literacy outcomes for all students, Riverside Primary School runs a number of programs under the MultiLit banner.
MultiLit stands for Making Up Lost Time in Literacy and is an intensive reading program designed to increase children’s progress in reading accuracy, fluency, comprehension and spelling. It is a research based initiative of Macquarie University in NSW, who have been producing reading programs for over 20 years.
MiniLit Sage – Participation in MiniLit Sage is offered to students who would benefit from additional support to help them learn to read and spell at the required level for their age. Teachers have selected children based on the results of short reading assessments provided with the program.
What is involved in the MiniLit Sage program?
Small groups of children work for 45 minutes, four times a week using the carefully structured MiniLit Sage program materials. Each lesson has two distinct areas of instruction:
• Working with Sounds and Words – where children are explicitly taught the relationship between sounds and letters and how this knowledge is critical to reading
• Practice and Application – where further opportunities are provided for the children to practise their reading skills using a variety of activities and resources.
MacqLit is a reading program for children in Years 3 and above who need some help with their reading. A trained Education Assistant works with small group of students for 50 minutes a day, four times a week, using the carefully structured MacqLit materials.
The primary focus of the MacqLit program is the need for older readers to develop strong word recognition strategies. It provides students with a comprehensive sequence of lessons that includes all the key components necessary for effective reading: phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension.
For working hard in MacQLit students enjoyed a MacqLit Lego Reward Day. Photos below show students working to build a farm from lego characters and if double ups occur negotiate with their MacqLit buddies to swap their pieces! Thank you to all parents and staff who have donated their Woolworths Farm Bricks – students LOVE them!
